Dodge Intrepid

 Model of the car:Dodge Intrepid
General comments:Except for the transmission and various trim pieces, I have had little problems with the car. It has been in the shop numerous times, but that was due to the very poor workmanship from Perth Chrylser (where the car was towed when the tranmission went - we were on a trip over X-mas and a tow company damage the car as well) and the fact my wife had a minor accident with the car not long ago. The car now has just over 60,000km on it (38,000 miles) and I hope the reliability lasts.Who should buy this car - It is big, so if you need room, the Intrepid has it - the trunk is huge and with fold down seats, you can fit even more. It handles well, is quiet and has a lot of standard features for the price. You also don't see one in every second driveway.
What things have gone wrong with the car:I've had numerous problems with the trim that was fixed over time (now I am out of warranty, though). Just before the warranty ran out (thank God it hadn't yet), the transmission went and had to be re-built. Had the WORST experience with Perth Chrysler in Perth, Ontario Canada. Avoid that dealership like the plague. I was treated very well by Chryler's roadside assistance people after the tow truck company they hired to tow the car damaged the front end to the tune of $2000.00.The autostick transmission is ok, but not that useful, especially since it shifts for you a couple hundred rpm before redline. The car does not have seat belt pretensioners or side-impact air bags (now an option) and the ABS is an option, not standard. The trunk opening is small but the trunk is HUGE. Try getting something from the back of the trunk that has rolled back there - you'll need some kind of hockey stick or golf club to retrieve it! There are no cup holders in back (although that changed with the 2000 edition). To get split-folding seats, you have to buy the ES version.
Previous car:Before the Intrepid, I owned a 1995 Passat (see review at this site). A great handling car with lots of creature comforts, but the Intrepid stacks up ok.
